What
Is DEXA Bone Density Screening?
DEXA
Bone Density Screening measures the density of your
bones and can monitor the rate of bone loss and response
to therapy. It is easy and painless and the radiation
is only a fraction of that received from a standard
chest x-ray.

Density Screening
Congratulations on taking the first step toward the
goal of a longer, healthier life!
Who Should Have DEXA Bone Density Screening?
Osteoporosis
is often called the “silent disease” because
bone loss occurs without symptoms. Osteoporosis is largely
preventable for most people. There are treatments available
but there is currently no cure. Certain people are more
likely to develop osteoporosis. The risk factors have
been identified as:
- Thin
or small frame
-
A family history of osteoporosis
-
Postmenopausal
-
Ovaries removed (hysterectomy)
-
Anorexia or bulimia
-
Diet low in calcium
-
Use of certain medications, such as corticosteroids
and anticonvulsants
-
Inactive lifestyle
-
Cigarette smoking
-
Excessive use of alcohol

Do I Need To See My Doctor First?
We
encourage all patients to work with their primary care
physician in incorporating the results of this test
into their own preventive health care plan. A physician
referral is not necessary for a screening
test (a test that does not require a diagnosis and is
self-pay). A physician referral is
necessary for a diagnostic test (a test that requires
certain diagnoses and may be reimbursed by Medicare
and most insurance companies).
How
Does DEXA Bone Density Screening Work?
DEXA
bone density studies of the spine and bilateral hip
are considered the “gold standard”
for diagnosing osteoporosis and following changes in
bone density over time. Low dose x-ray of two different
energies is used to distinguish between bone and soft
tissue, giving a very accurate measurement of bone density
at these sites.
What
To Expect During Your Exam
You
will be asked to arrive 15 minutes early to fill out
a patient questionnaire. A technologist will then assist
you to the Bone Density Screening room where you will
lie on a comfortable table. The screening exam takes
less than 5 minutes. You will be asked to be very still
during this time. It is painless, non-invasive and safe.
You will be exposed to very little radiation –
less than a standard chest x-ray. You may eat or drink
prior to the exam. Note: There is a 5-day waiting period
if you have had a bone scan, barium enema or IV contrast.
What
Should I wear?
A
gown will be provided for you when you arrive.
Is
DEXA Bone Density Screening The Same As A Bone Scan?
No.
A bone scan is a study used to identify cancer and other
bone abnormalities and requires an injection of radioactive
material. A bone density screening requires no special
preparation, medication or injection.
What
Do The Results Mean?
The
results will be classified into one of the three categories.
-
Normal Bone Mass: (A repeat study in 3 to 5 years
to evaluate bone loss)
-
Osteopenia: (Low Bone Mass – repeat the screening
in 1 year to determine progression toward osteoporosis)
-
Osteoporosis: (The patient may be at increased risk
for fracture. Consult your primary care physician.
A repeat study in 1 year to evaluate effects of therapy
or progression of bone loss.)
A letter will be sent to you and your primary care physician
with the results of your Bone Density Screening along
with follow-up recommendations.
Can Anything Be Done If The Test Is Positive?
Yes.
Your primary care physician can recommend several treatment
options. They might include medication, exercise and
dietary changes.
Will
My Insurance Pay For This Exam?
Insurance
companies will not reimburse for Bone Density
Screening. The patient is responsible for payment
at the time of service. Payment may be made by cash,
check, debit or major credit card.
Medicare
and most major insurance companies will reimburse for
Diagnostic Bone Density Testing. The
patient must have an approved diagnosis (ex. ovaries
removed or postmenopausal). Please check your individual
insurance policy concerning coverage. Radiology Consultants
will file your insurance claim for reimbursement of
diagnostic services.
Early Detection Screening Is The Key!
The
cost of the Bone Density Screening is $210
(NOTE: Medicare and most insurance companies
will pay for a Diagnostic Bone Density Test if you meet
certain diagnoses.)
